METEORA

TRIP TO GREECE
Piraeus is a city in southwestern Greece in the periphery of Attica, on the Gulf of Aegina. It was the port of ancient Athens and was chosen to function as a modern port when this city was refounded in 1834. Piraeus is a rocky promontory with three natural harbors, the largest in the northwest, which serves as an important port trade to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the two smaller ones are used for naval purposes. The port has ferry services to almost all islands in the east of Greece and many northern and eastern Aegean. The western part of the port is used for freight services and covers a large area. You can get to Piraeus from Athens city center by bus or metro, as well as from the airport.
PAROS ISLAND
Paros is a small Greek island of the Cyclades Islands in Aegean Sea, south of the island of Delos and to the west of Naxos, from which it is separated by a channel. It is the third largest island in the archipelago, with 207 km² and 118 km of beaches. It is an island with little vegetation, mountainous and large flat areas suitable for cultivation. It has two large natural gulfs, the Naussa and Parikia. It has a population of 15,000 inhabitants, known by the adjective of parios. In ancient times the island had a city that is called with the same name of Paros.
You can reach the island from the port of Piraeus by ferry. The ferry takes you to the city of Parikia where most visitors stay in typical Greek hotels. Parikia offers many hotels, rooms, shops, cafes and restaurants. One of the attractions of Parikia is to see the sunset from one of its cafes. Apart from Parikia you have the possibility to rent any transport to move around the island and also has a good bus line that runs along the island.
Paros is an island that receives a lot of tourism, but it is still not sutured as with other best-known islands. It has lots of sandy beaches equipped with umbrellas and hammocks if you want to rent it, and besides there are 2 populations Parikia to be a must: Naoussa and Lefkes.
- Driving without law and order. Few Greeks put the helmet to ride a motorcycle or quad, but also are able to advance or have not been dashed line.
- Cats and dogs. The streets of any city or town in Greece are full of cats, to give an example to our Paros hotel had a cat that slipped 3 times in our room. But also in the city of Athens you can see quite a large stray dogs on the street and that the government looks after Athens. They are completely harmless dogs who share the streets with the people of Athens. But the biggest surprise is that it saw no dog poop in the streets at any time, and that Athens is a very clean city.
- Gastronomy. The best thing to eat in a restaurant in Greece is that you feel at home: prices are quite like Spaniards and meal times too. However, we were amazed that in any restaurant after lunch we were asked if we wanted anything more, no dessert, no coffee, nothing. But it is that even in some asked for the bill and they put out some dessert gift. As for the typical Greek meals we've fallen in love with the moussaka, gyros and Greek salad with feta cheese, all great.
- Owls and helmets. We drew attention found in all souvenir shops in Athens a lot of owls and helmets. Finally we discovered that they were related to Athena, goddess of warfare and protector of the city of Athens and it is always represented with a helmet and accompanied by a little owl, known as the Owl of Athena.
And so far this post on a great journey and experience that has left us wanting more.

Day 9 : Return journey from Athens to Valencia.
In this post I will show you in detail each of
the parts of Greece that I've had the luxury of visiting . Let's start
with the first :
METEORA
The monasteries of Meteora are located in
northern Greece, in the plain of Thessaly, near Kalambaka city, about 4 hours
drive from Athens. They are classified as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1988. buildings
are perched on top of gray rock masses, carved by erosion and calls Meteora. They
are to a height of 600 meters and are inhabited since the fourteenth century. These
Orthodox Christian monasteries are an important part of the Greek Orthodox
monasticism.
There are 6 monasteries in Meteora, which can
be visited by tourists, paying an entry of 3 euros each. However, monasteries
often remain closed at least one day a week, but never matched.
To go from one monastery to another can go by
car or motorcycle, and the roads are good. Once parked in the parking lot of
each monastery, to access them must climb on foot. To visit women should go
with the legs, shoulders and chest covered, but do not worry, every monastery
there skirts and pashminas to wear. Men can go through short-sleeved shirt and
shorts smoothly. To visit all the monasteries are needed between 6-7 hours.
To stay, lunch or dinner there to stay in the
villages of Kalambaka or Kastraki from where you can have a good view of the
rocky masses of Meteora. Especially Kalambaka is full of Greek traditional
restaurants where you can taste its gastronomy.
DELPHI
Delphi is an archaeological site and a modern
town in Greece . In ancient times it was the site of the Delphic oracle ,
inside a temple dedicated to the god Apollo. Delphi was revered throughout the
Greek world as the site of the omphalos or center of the universe . Delphi
archaeological site was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 .
Delphi is approximately 3 hours from Meteora
and 2 hours drive from Athens .
The archaeological site is composed of 3 places:
1. The sanctuary of Apollo. It is the largest
archaeological site of 3 found in Delphi. To access this archaeological site I
have to pay an entrance fee of 6 euros.
2. The fitness .
3. The Temple of Athena .
ATHENS
Athens is the capital of Greece and currently
the country's largest city. It is the main center of economic, cultural and
Greek politics. The history of Athens extends more than 3,000 years, making it
one of the oldest inhabited cities. During the classical period of Greece, it
was a powerful city-state that came along with the development of shipping from
the port of Piraeus and played a key role in the development of democracy. He
was also a cultural center where they lived many great artists, writers and
philosophers of antiquity. These contributions from Athens to the thought of
his time had a great influence on the development of Greece, Rome and Western
culture.
Athens is a city rich in archaeological remains
of paramount importance, of which we highlight:
- Acropolis of Athens. It contains some of the
most famous monuments of the classical age of Greece: the Parthenon, the
Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea.
- Theatre of Dionysus.
- Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
- Ancient Agora.
- Roman Agora.
- Library of Hadrian.
- Hadrian.
- Panathenaic Stadium.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus.
We can also see in Athens Syntagma Square where
Parliament, an imposing building which was built between 1836 and 1842 as a
palace for Otto, first king of Greece is. In front of the Parliament building
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies, guarded day and night "Evzoni" two
guards dressed in a curious traditional uniform. You may attend the peculiar
change of guard takes place every hour.
You can reach Athens from the airport by
underground and bus. The best neighborhoods to stay and enjoy full of Athens is
the Plaka and Monastraki, full of hotels or hostels, traditional restaurants
and souvenir shops.
